The Difference: "Think Of" vs. "Think About"

Think Of

  • To Create/Invent: "I need to think of a plan."
  • To Remember: "I can't think of his name."
  • To Have an Opinion: "What do you think of this dress?"
  • Brief Flash: A thought that crosses your mind momentarily. "I just thought of a funny joke."

Think About

  • To Consider/Ponder: "I will think about your offer."
  • Process: Focusing your mind on something for a period of time. "She is thinking about how to solve the problem."
  • Reflection: "She is thinking about her future."
  • Planning: "We are thinking about going to Spain."
Note: Sometimes they are interchangeable, but "Think About" usually implies a longer process, while "Think Of" is often instant.
